For pilgrims arriving from the high plateaux of the Aubrac, the view over the old town of Saint Côme d'Olt has remained unchanged for several centuries. You enter the village through the Théron Gate and, once you have passed through, a wonderful network of narrow streets is revealed with astonishing buildings, preserved for 600 years.

The Gothic church, in particular, crowned with a magnificent twisted spire is a rarity in France. It is not actually known whether the spiral was intended by its builders or whether it became twisted because of stresses in the framework. The former manor of the Lords of Calmont, built in the 12th century was a nobleman’s house and stands close by. Also not to be missed is the Penitents’ Chapel that stands beside one of the main drovers’ roads that came down from the Aubrac, a former Roman road that was taken by pilgrims travelling from Le Puy towards Santiago de Compostela.
