The most famous and most ancient of the bastides (fortified towns or villages) in the Albigeois area is still a source of mystery and inspiration for visitors and for the artists who dwell in its medieval centre.

Cordes was built in 1222 by Raymond VII Count of Toulouse and grew rapidly at the end of the 13th century thanks to the trade provided by its many craftsmen. Its development was to reach its high point with the construction of wonderful Gothic palaces by the families of nobles and rich merchants.
