Huddled alongside the fortifications of a monastery, Carennac offers a truly picturesque charm with its houses of pale gold stone, covered with Virginia creeper and wisteria and its roofs of russet and brown tiles. The river Dordogne adds further beauty to the location.
The buildings in Carennac – restored to their former glory by remarkable restoration work carried out by local artists and craftsmen – surround a priory founded in the 11th century. A beautiful Romanesque church, dating from the 11th and 12th centuries is attached to the village priory together with the Deans’ château which today houses the Heritage Centre, a real shop window for the Dordogne Valley, Region of Art and History.
