Cordes-sur-Ciel

The most famous and most ancient of the bastides (fortified towns or villages) in the Albigeois area is still a source of mystery and inspiration for visitors and for the artists who dwell in its medieval centre.

cordes

Cordes was built in 1222 by Raymond VII Count of Toulouse and grew rapidly at the end of the 13th century thanks to the trade provided by its many craftsmen. Its development was to reach its high point with the construction of wonderful Gothic palaces by the families of nobles and rich merchants. The façades of the house of the Grand Fauconnier (Grand Falconer), Grand Veneur (Grand Hunter) or Grand Ecuyer (Grand Master of Horse) are especially rich in mysterious decorations. The formidable defences that surround the citadel protected and concealed these treasures so perfectly that, 800 years on, they have come down to us intact.

Cordes,  renamed Cordes-sur-Ciel in 1993 still has retained its atmosphere of a commercial stronghold and even today has a host of craftsmen and artists of every kind to prolong the town’s artistic reputation. Don’t hesitate to go into the workshops to soak up the smells, shapes and atmosphere of the citadel.
