At the foot of the Black Mountain, this characterful village grew up around its Benedictine abbey. During the reign of Louis XVI it became one of the realm’s twelve royal military schools and an important centre of learning under the orders and instructions of Père Lacordaire.

Its reputation and renown increased and soon spread beyond the frontiers of the realm.
Today it is listed as an historical monument and offers tours of its museum to allow visitors to experience the life of its pupils in the great days of the school.
But learning is still cultivated at the Abbey which still hosts workshops in painting, theatre and music.
