A few kilometres from Villefranche-de-Rouergue, in the magnificent Gorges of the river Aveyron, Najac has been the crossroads of the Rouergue from time immemorial. Its surroundings and the wealth of its natural environment make it one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France.

The first thing that impresses the visitor to Najac is the fortress that looms over the village. It was built in two stages by the Counts of Toulouse and Alphonse de Poitiers, the brother of the king of France, and protected the village until the arrival of the English during the Hundred Years’ War. The next thing to strike the visitor is the village itself: a single street that winds along the crest of the rocky outcrop. It starts in the Place du Barry, edged with timbered houses perched on pillars of pink sandstone, with sculptures and fountains, until it reaches the church of St Jean. Finally the gorges of the Aveyron, down below, can offer a variety of activities both water and land-based: canoeing, mountain-biking, walking, etc…
